Music and Happiness was created to illustrate the power of music to create and shape happiness. Music plays a major role in creating a higher quality of life, especially as people grow older. Research tells us that positive inter-generational connections are important for our well being. Music provides an enjoyable natural way for different generations to bond.
The Ageless Mind Project, a nonprofit (501c3) organization, encompasses both music and other activities that research shows contribute to a higher quality of life, especially as people grow older. This Project has already established a major online presence in virtual environments as well as through in-person workshops and classes.
In Music is Brain Food, a teaser is shared for the workshop offered at the Aging in America Conference in Washington, D.C. in 2012. During the workshop “Music for Brain Fitness: An Innovative Inter-generational Approach,” three seemingly unrelated songs are presented. At first, these three songs couldn’t be more different. However, the connection that binds the three songs lies deep in our DNA. The connection that isn’t obvious unless you know what to listen for.
We chose those pieces because they demonstrate how music that sounds very different can actually come from a common source, crossing time and space and genres. They are all built on one of the basic elements of music, the Pentatonic Scale.
Ageless Mind Project co-founder Joshua Berrett, Ph.D. teaches this and many other online courses covering many kinds of music and musicians, like the very popular ones he offers in Lifelong Learners programs. His knowledge as a professional musicologist is encyclopedic, so if you have a burning desire to learn about something musical, feel free to contact him.
